Silico Manganese, also known as silicon manganese alloy, is a solid material with a metallic silver luster. It serves as a composite deoxidizer widely used in steelmaking processes. Additionally, it acts as a reducing agent in the production of low-carbon ferromanganese and electro-silicothermal manganese metal.
When added to molten steel, silico manganese improves reduction efficiency and significantly enhances the toughness, hardness, strength, and elasticity of the steel. Silicon in the alloy functions as an effective graphitizing agent, facilitating the transformation of carbon in cast iron into free graphite. For standard gray cast iron and ductile cast iron, a minimum silicon content of 4% is required.
Most manganese and silicon elements in steelmaking are introduced through ferroalloys such as ferromanganese, silico manganese, and ferrosilicon.

Raw Material Composition of Silicon Manganese
Silicon manganese alloy is typically smelted continuously in large, medium, and small submerged arc furnaces. Currently, major silico manganese manufacturers are moving towards larger-scale and fully enclosed electric furnace designs to improve efficiency and product quality.
To ensure a high qualification rate of silico manganese products, the ratio of ferromanganese to manganese-phosphorus content in the raw ore must meet specific requirements. Generally, the higher the manganese content in the manganese ore, the better the overall performance of the final product.
The main raw material requirements for silico manganese production are as follows:
Silica (SiO₂): ≥97% purity, with P₂O₅ content less than 0.02%. Particle size should be between 10-40mm, free from soil and other impurities.
Coke: Fixed carbon content above 84%, ash content below 14%. For small and medium electric furnaces, coke particle size ranges from 3-13mm; for large furnaces, 5-25mm is used.
Manganese Ore: The impurity P₂O₅ content should be as low as possible. Particle size typically ranges from 10-80mm, with particles smaller than 10mm not exceeding 10% of the total ore volume.
Ferro Silicon Manganese Production Process
Silico manganese alloy is produced by the carbothermic reduction of manganese oxide and silicon dioxide found in manganese ore and silica, using charcoal as the reducing agent. During the smelting process, raw materials such as carbonaceous reducing agents, manganese ore, manganese-rich slag, sintered manganese ore, roasted manganese ore, and silica are fed into the electric furnace. Fluxes like lime, dolomite, and fluorite are added to facilitate continuous slag formation and maintain furnace operation.
