Ferromanganese is an essential ferroalloy used primarily in steelmaking to add manganese and improve steel’s strength, toughness, and wear resistance. It acts as a deoxidizer and alloying agent, helping to remove oxygen and sulfur from molten steel. Ferro Manganese is available in various grades and forms, meeting the diverse needs of the metallurgical industry for producing high-quality steels.
Types of Ferro Manganese
1. High Carbon Ferro Manganese (C: approx. 7%)
Mainly used in the production of carbon steel and cast iron as a cost-effective alloying and deoxidizing agent. It provides manganese and carbon to improve strength and wear resistance.
2. Medium Carbon Ferro Manganese (C: approx. 1.0–2%)
Commonly applied in the manufacture of alloy steels, where controlled carbon content is important. It helps improve toughness and reduces sulfur content in steel.
3. Low Carbon Ferro Manganese (C: max 1.0%)
Primarily used in stainless steel and special steel production, where low carbon content is critical to maintain corrosion resistance and mechanical properties.

Uses of Ferro Manganese
In the Steel Industry: Ferro manganese is widely used as a deoxidizer and desulfurizer during steelmaking. It helps remove harmful elements from molten steel, significantly improving steel quality. Typically, about 3–5 kg of FeMn75# is consumed to produce one ton of steel.
In the Foundry Industry: Ferro manganese acts as a nucleating and nodulizing agent in the production of nodular cast iron. It accelerates graphite precipitation, shortens nodulizing time, reduces impurities in molten steel, enhances cast iron quality, minimizes furnace nozzle blockage, and effectively extends the service life of smelting furnaces.
In Other Industries: High carbon ferro manganese serves as a reducing agent in the production of low carbon ferroalloys. Ferro manganese powder is also used in welding materials and mineral separation processes. Additionally, high manganese ferromanganese finds applications in the electrical industry for producing semiconductor-grade pure manganese and in the chemical industry for manufacturing manganese ketone.
Preparation Method of Ferro Manganese
Ferro manganese can be produced using various methods, including the blast furnace method, electric furnace smelting, and the oxygen blast furnace process. Traditionally, carbon ferromanganese was mainly smelted in blast furnaces. However, with the advancement of the electric power industry, electric furnace usage has gradually increased.
Blast Furnace Method: In this method, manganese oxide is directly reduced to metal by carbon in the blast furnace. Oxygen blowing raises the furnace temperature and enhances the output of ferromanganese.
Electric Furnace Smelting: Medium and low carbon ferro manganese are produced by desiliconization and refining in a 1500-1600 kVA electric furnace, using raw materials such as manganese silicon, manganese-rich ore, and lime. The main reaction is: MnSi + 2MnO + 2CaO → 3Mn + 2CaO·SiO₂
Oxygen Blast Furnace: Medium and low carbon ferro manganese can also be obtained by blowing pure oxygen into molten carbon ferro manganese, which improves refining efficiency.
